Frederick Gilbert Bourne, the 5th president of the Singer Sewing Machine Co. built the 5 story, 28 room Singer Castle designed by Ernest Flagg. Just for starters, there is Singer Castle, which was a private residence for 100 years, the castle was opened to the public in 2003. The hour tour took us through the Great Hall, Library, Dining Room, Breakfast Room, Terrace, Drawing Room, Bedrooms, Turret Master Bathroom, Guest Rooms, and 4th floor dormitory. Views from the rooms & secret passageways were impressive. Original furniture, drapes, floor coverings were pointed out by our guide. We walked through t he Castle Greens, Squash Courts, Ice House, Pergola, & Rose Garden.
Geoge C. Boldt, millionaire proprietor of the Waldorm Astorial Hotel, built a full sized Rhineland Castle on Heart Island in 1900. The family shared 4 summers on Wellsley Island while 300 workers, stonemasons, carpenters & artists built the six story, 120 room castle with tunnels, a power house, Italian gardens, a drawbridge, indoor pool, and dovecote. In 1904, Boldt telegrammed the island & stopped construction because his wife Louise died of dysentery. Boldt could not image his dream castle without Louise; he never returned to the castle & the project was never completed.
There is a surprisingly good selection of Alexandria Bay Cruise Port Hotels so you can set up your park and sail booking and maybe even enjoy a nice tour of Millionaire's Row before your cruise.
