Alexandria still retains the character and charm of an historic port city, and was recently cited as one of only six cities in the nation to receive the coveted "Innovation Award for Outstanding Community Building" by the National League of Cities. Alexandria's History Museum hosts exhibitions, lectures and concerts, and many other visitor attractions.

Alexandria is one of the most historic communities in America. Laid out in 1749, the city was founded by merchants to serve as a port and point of commerce for the plantations and communities of the region. They were very successful, within 50 years Alexandria was an important trading center, recognized as one of the finest towns in Virginia. The town has hosted many notables and claims both George Washington and Robert E. Lee as native sons.

Alexandria is still an important commercial center, more noted now for tourism and upscale shopping than agricultural products. There are about 30 or so Alexandria Cruise Port hotels to choose from, and very nearby. Many of the streets are lined with 18th century buildings and strict regulations serve to maintain the historic atmosphere. Old Town is considered a model for historic redevelopment. Outside of the historic district, Alexandria is a booming commercial success, along with most of Northern Virginia.Sightseeing before your cruise would definitely be a lovely experience. There is an Alexandria Cruise Port parking lot right by the dock - but the best plan, as always, would be a park and sail package, which will not only save you money, but give you the pretrip leisure time to explore and enjoy this unique historic place.
