In a sea of miserable, broken-down contenders, Detroit Airport stands head and shoulders above the rest. Clean and bright, with tall ceilings and plenty of windows, I'll quote another fan who said that it is the only U.S. airport that strikes you as first world. Well designed and laid out, with very comfortable furnishings, spotlessly clean bathrooms (can it be true?) and food that is dramatically better than other U.S. airports, Detroit is mentioned again and again by knowledgeable travelers as their preferred point of entry for the U.S.

Although Detroit Airport parking is plentiful, its still an exasperating hunt for a mythical parking spot followed by the breathless sprint, with luggage, to the terminal - but unless you live in a cave, you know to avoid all that by taking advantage of park & fly package, stay in one of the wonderful Detroit airport hotels and start your trip off right.

The terminal is extra long, and serviced by moving sidewalks and a tram. The staff are outstanding, nice beyond all expectation. Other airport staff will give help resentfully/grudgingly, they clearly hate their jobs, and maybe you, but the earnestly offered care and support here is unmatched at any other airport in the country.
