Air-travel. There was a time when it was glamorous, exhilarating, and a joy to experience. We find ourselves in an age where most people dread flying, let along going the airport - until now. When Indianapolis designed the new airport, there were some smart folks in the room; it is really a beautiful facility with inspiring architecture and integrated art from local landscapes. It has a great departure/pick-up area with a well-oiled security checkpoint. No terminal is more than a few-minute walk away. And with restaurants that highlight the spice of Indy, there are plenty of places to pass the time with ease, including that tear-jerking shrimp cocktail from Harry & Izzy's.
This airport is all shiny and new. It is laid out well enough and the rental cars on on-site (no shuttle bus to the outer realms). Some say it is small, some say huge - well I am going with medium! No trains, no shuttles, just lots of escalators everywhere. It is very walkable. The ticket counters are sort of set up differently than most airports with the counters turned out and facing another counter, so it helps with traffic and flow. They have plenty of restaurants, but a lot of them are on the main terminal. Sorta free free wi-fi, in spots. Baggage was a breeze.
As far as the Indianapolis International Airport Parking situation goes, if you park in the economy lots, the bus won't bring you up to the terminal. You must walk the gap, you cheap so-and-so. Park closer and you'll get a nicer bus. If you park at the external lots, you have a long ways to go to get to the terminal, and the Airport Authority is fighting tooth and nail to allow other offsite parking lots along its former Ameriplex Parkway. Might be too convenient or provide meaningful competition.I don't really care about those things, always just go book a park and fly with a nice IND airport hotel room, so I can rest easy about my car and have somebody else do the driving to the terminal.
Other highlights, cell phone lot, taxi button, free-ish wi-fi, large baggage claim area, easy public transit to get downtown, easy to navigate. Best of all, the light show as you come in from the parking garage, I enjoy it every time!
