Hilo International Airport is so very "Hilo." Small, unassuming, intimate and doesn't try to be anything than exactly what it is... a small town airport. When you walk off the plane you'll walk a short distance from your gate to the baggage claim which is located right downstairs. If you're renting a car you go right across the street. Life has become so overly complicated that this simple set-up is a delightful break from everyday chaos. And the moment you arrive, the scent of island flowers hits you right away; that's very nice. Hilo Airport parking is actually surprisingly reasonably priced.

When departing Hilo, it's so easy to go through TSA and everyone is so friendly. It reminds me that we all need to slow down a little bit, breathe in deeply and take life not so seriously. Did I mention that I love fantastic mix of locally made snacks in the gift shop?! Perfect for that omiyagi you forgot to get! I hope this airport never changes, and something tells me it never will...It seems like all the problems you have at regular airports you don't have here. The staff is super nice and actually cares about you getting on the airport on time and not missing your flight. The line for security is never long to go through. Plus boarding is super quick and the plane takes off within ten minutes of boarding which is awesome.

I love this airport. Its a breeze and makes traveling actually fun. The only problem I have with this airport is that it's 2 miles away from anything and the flight times are really weird. So you fly in before anything opens or you fly in after any shuttle pick up to the Hilo Airport hotels.
