If you've ever visited Santorini, you thought that was as ancient as it gets. But we were both wrong, Malta is as ancient as you can possibly experience while still standing on planet earth. Although the city is fully modernized, and our hotel was lovely and contemporary, we could not believe our eyes when we saw the old city, and the megalithic temples, which are some of the oldest structures in the world. Charming fishing boats and truly wonderful food, and although they have resorts and casinos, make the wise choice and see the old city - especially if you're on a cruise and have only one day to spend.

From the moment you approach the Malta cruiseport of Valletta, you know you'll never see anything like this anywhere else. The atmosphere is positively magical. We loved it so much, and felt there was so much we hadn't been able to take in, that we're planning a full hotel vacation for next year. Since any money we save is money we can use having a blast or brinking home trinkets, we always go for a park and fly package, no matter where we're headed: because airport parking is ridiculously expensive and (is this news?) not so safe. If you're a travel hound, like me, and you think you've seen it all, Malta will certainly surprise you.
