You can definitely tell this place was built in 1969, as it looks like a giant box as you approach it. I do like that they are in the process of doing renovations, because I now understand why people believe Elvis is still alive. He is still somewhere in the bowels of this airport (maybe in the Elvis shop) wondering why the airport has not been updated since his reported death. Oh, and FedEx also uses MEM as their main air hub. The airline options are super limited. I feel fairly confident that at least 80% of the flights in the airport are Delta. There is essentially no other airline as a choice...unless you want to shove yourself in a FedEx crate. Sorry if you're claustrophobic, even though Delta Coach is just like a fdx crate, you have to use them, or you don't go to Memphis. You will have no trouble finding a Memphis Airport hotel, and some even have framed photos of Elvis, baby.
They are, however, fast and efficient here and I even love dropping off/picking someone up here. There's a convenient cell phone lot where you can just wait in your car until your loved one arrives, and there's also Memphis Airport parking that's free for the first 30 minutes, also accesible and easy to get in and out of. Terminal B is very nice. Loads of gates. Many charging stations for mobile devices. There''s a boat load of BBQ places here at the airport, and The Blue Note has a smoking area.
My biggest complaint is that there is NO free wifi Internet access. Its one of the few airports that I have been to recently that does not have free wifi. The airport itself is super small. Why does a large metropolitan city have an airport that is a $100 cab ride away from downtown, like 40 minutes from downtown, and have the square-footage of some of the FedEx boxes being shipped out of this airport.
