Newark Liberty International New Jersey Airport (EWR)
The city of Newark spent more than $8.2 million on construction and development of the airport. The U.S. government spent more than $15.1 million prior to 1948. The Port Authority has invested more than $4.3 billion in the airport.
Employment and Economic Impact
About 24,000 people are employed at the airport. Newark Liberty contributes about $18.5 billion in economic activity to the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region including more than $6.7 billion in wages and salaries. About 157,000 jobs are derived from airport activity.
Port Authority Administration Building
In 2002, reconstruction of the National Historic Landmark Newark Liberty International Airport's Administration Building #1 was completed. The new 100,000 square-foot building houses much of the Port Authority's airport staff.
Central Terminal Area
The 425-acre oval Central Terminal Area was built as part of a large-scale airport redevelopment program in the 1960s and early 1970s.
Terminals Newark Liberty has three major terminals: A, B and C.
Terminal A
With 27 gates, Terminal A branches out into three circular satellite buildings, designed as A-1, A-2 and A-3. The main terminal building measures approximately 800 by 165 feet.
Terminal B
In Terminal B, Delta performed a $5.5 million modernization of its gate area. Boarding and baggage areas were also updated there. The $117 million International Arrivals Facility located in Terminal B opened in January 1996. This facility has 15 international arrivals gates. In 2002, a multi-million dollar project that included the replacement of escalators, installation of new revolving doors, and three freight-sized elevators was completed. When the $325 million dollar modernization of Terminal B is completed, there will be new ticket counters, a domestic baggage claim, updated in-line baggage screening and passenger screening in addition to more shops and restaurants.
Terminal C
At Terminal C, Continental's Global Gateway project includes the C3 concourse, which opened in December 2001. With an additional 600,000 square feet of space, the facility was converted into a three-level terminal with two levels for departures. The concourse has 19 gates, a huge retail space and Customs facilities. Continental also completed its state-of-the-art International Arrivals facility adding another 1,500 passengers-per-hour arrival capacity to the airport.
AirTrain Newark
In the fall of 2001, AirTrain Newark began service to the Newark Liberty International Airport Train Station where passengers can connect to NJ TRANSIT and Amtrak rail lines. The AirTrain connection provides an all-rail link between the airport and New York City, Philadelphia, points across New Jersey and destinations beyond. In 2009, AirTrain Newark had a ridership of nearly 1.9 million riders.
Cargo
Newark Liberty is the overnight small package center for the New York, New Jersey region, offering a full range of short-, medium- and long-haul services to domestic and international destinations. The airport expanded its cargo capacity in 2004 with the opening of a 142,000 square-foot facility, which combined with United and Continental's cargo buildings, increases cargo space at the airport to 1.3 million square feet.
The Port Authority and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) are dedicated to making your travel experience safe and secure. We ask you to take a moment to become familiar with some important security measures. By reviewing them now, you will save time at the airport.
The key to getting through the airport faster is being prepared. Take these steps in order to minimize time at security checkpoints:
* Pack luggage in layers (this increases visibility when baggage is scanned) * Ready your boarding pass and ID * Take off outer garments and shoes * Place any loose metal objects in your carry-on * Remove your laptop from your bag and place it in the bin * Passengers should consider placing additional items in checked baggage since this will ensure a more efficient screening process at TSA screening checkpoints (passengers are reminded that the air carriers request they bring only one carry-on bag and one personal item per person). * Passengers are encouraged to have prescription cards for all medications including syringes. Medications should be in original packaging. * Passengers can also expect additional security procedures to be in place including possible body pat downs. * Passengers should give themselves extra time to check in and proceed through the security checkpoint before their flight, especially during the busy holiday travel season.
Liquids: Keep in mind that liquids are allowed in carry-on luggage only in accordance with the TSA’s 3-1-1 format. Please review this policy.

When traveling with pets, pets should remain in their carriers at all times except for service animals. The Port Authority of NY and NJ and our airport partners have provided pet relief areas for customers. These areas are located in the arrivals area of each terminal. Follow the signs in the baggage claim areas or ask a Customer Care Representative for information.
Owners can take their animals to these pet relief areas and allow the pets to relieve themselves. Owners are expected to clean up after their animals with the materials provided in the pet relief areas. Pet owners whose animals have an accident elsewhere in the terminal are expected to clean up after their animals and notify a member of the cleaning crew.
There are no pet relief areas beyond security checkpoints in any of the terminals at the Port Authority airports.
As policies relating to the transportation of pets vary by airline and time of year, we suggest you contact your airlines directly for details. Trusted Traveler Programs
