Philadelphia International is older, and definitely showing signs of aging. The floors and walls are badly scuffed, the restrooms are dingy with a lot of cracked tiles, and it generally feels as though this place got left behind in the 70's.
Very few restaurant / fast-food options leaving you with the burning desire to get the heck out of there -- which is what most people seem to be doing.
The walk to baggage claim is quite a hike, and the signage is confusing once you do get down to the luggage area.
If taking SEPTA please have cash at hand. Unfortunately there are no kiosks to buy tickets in advance and train cars are cash only. Trains run every 30 minutes and are frequently late, but only cost $7 to Center City (versus a flat rate taxi that will run $35 + change after fuel surcharge and tip). PHL Airport Parking is, of course, hair-raisingly expensive; you're better off booking a park and fly with a Philadelphia Intl. Airport hotel - and your car is better off too.
But the general consensus is that PHL is just plain abysmal. If you have a US Airways connection in Terminal F, forget it. Getting to terminal F requires a maze of walkways and a shuttle situation - idiot proof with signage as airports often are, but the issue is sheer TIME. I seriously booked it from my arriving flight to my next gate at terminal F and it took me 45 minutes. They also told us we would have to re-screen (security) which would have added another 30 minutes given this general cluster over here, but at least that didn't happen.
It should NOT take a better part of an hour to get to a connecting gate. This is why PHL is so cheap - not to mention that US Don't-Care-Ways is a terrible airline. Suffice it to say that if you want relatively lousy airline service, well, US Airways is for you. Avoid if possible.
One good thing is that they recently changed from paid to free WiFi and it is actually pretty decent quality WiFi as well for an airport. But should that be the only good thing about an airport?
There are total of 6 terminals - A, B, C, D, E, and F. In order to get to terminal F from terminal A - E, you probably have no other choice except to take the shuttle bus. Why? 1st of all it's not a 5-minutes walking distance to terminal F. And if you decide to walk to terminal F .... then you will need to go through the security check AGAIN!
