As cities expand, farmland is often pushed farther and farther away from markets for city dwellers. Transporting vegetables across long distances increases their costs and environmental impacts. What’s worse, some veggies—particularly leafy greens—simply don’t travel well.

Growing these veggies where city dwellers live, like on their rooftops, is a potential solution to this problem. Across China, where mega-cities are expanding, there are nearly 2.5 million acres of available rooftop—and counting. And now, there is a feasibility study that shows that leafy greens grown there are not only profitable, but also comparable in nutritional content and quality
