Of course you know that Puerto Rico is a fantastic destination. Having said that, here comes my review of SJU airport, which to start with, apparently does not have a problem with your drug problem. I say this because I had the pleasure of watching a man pull his pipe from his shirt and light up. The familiar scent of vanilla and tobacco did not waft from this pipe;the other familiar scent of cannabis did, though. I have no problem with the dude lighting up. Toke away, brother. But um, hello.. .security? If you're letting this guy get away with smoking pot in your airport , what else are you letting slide? While San Juan is, officially, a part of the United States do not let that fool you. You will notice immediately that you are still, unofficially, in another country and world. Make sure you set up a hotel and parking package so you can recuperate from, or brace yourself for your SJU experience, in a nice San Juan Airport hotel. If not, then enjoy your empty wallet after paying $18 for the first day, and $12 therefater for your San Juan Airport parking.
Things are noticeably run down and dirty here. Nearly every bathroom is beyond pathetic in cleanliness and being stocked with basics, like soap and water, and it's always a mystery if your sink is going to actually work or if your stall will have a working lock. There are no charging stations at gates. There is a not enough seating, especially for the size of aircraft that are flown in here. There are some souvenir kiosks setup near gates and each Terminal has a Duty Free store.
If arriving from the US you will not have to clear Customs as this is a US territory. If arriving from anywhere outside the US, or USVI's, you will unfortunately go through Customs. After being harassed and interrogated you will exit Customs and, unless connecting to American (as their terminal is right next door) have ZERO clue as to where to go. Turn left and walk through a 1/4 mile of dark and dingy hallway, enjoying the urine smell as you speedwalk, until you exit just outside the Terminal C security checkpoint. Oh, and I hope you weren't expecting Air-conditioning. From here you will be near the food court and ticket counters.
If you only flew Jet Blue, and never wandered away from Terminal A, you would think the airport is modern, clean and refreshing. Someday we can only hope and pray that the other 90% of it can achieve this remarkable status. This is as brutally honest of a review as you will find . Puerto Rico is a beautiful place, and deserves a better airport. Until then, abandon hope, all ye who enter here.
