This is a hugely popular museum not only known for its magnificent architecture but also for the unique artifacts on display. The museum is said to have been built in 537 AD by Justinian, Byzantine Emperor.
The building was used as a church, and it continued to be used as church for about 1000 years. Later on, the building was converted into a mosque. The building acted as a mosque for 481 years. In 1935, the building was declared as a museum by the first President of Turkey, Ataturk.
Blue Mosque
The name Blue Mosque has been given to this building because of its blue hue. The building is made using tiles of blue iznik. The building is a piece of art in itself and its minarets can be seen from a long distance. The mosque was built in 17th century, and it is made up of impressive domes. There are six minarets in the mosque, and it was built opposite to the famous Hagia Sophia Mosque. The courtyard of this mosque is truly vast.
Topkapi Palace
Topkapi palace is the official residence of Ottoman Sultans. For more than 400 years, the palace acted as the imperial residence. A part of the palace is free to visit. Tourists are very much interested to see the harem area of the palace. Daily tours are conducted, and guides offer a wealth of information to the tourists coming here. The palace is open from Wednesday to Monday.
Grand Bazar
Another important attraction in the city is the Grand Bazaar. Tourists are mesmerized to see the narrow lanes and by lanes of the bazaar with shops on both sides. Earlier it was a warehouse but later on it was converted into bazaar. Today, the place has gained popularity as a renowned shopping area of the city. This bazaar is covered, and this is the unique aspect of this bazaar. Visitors can pick up jewelry, clothes, pottery, rugs and many more at cost effective prices.
Spice Bazaar
As the name suggests, this is the place where visitors can buy high quality spices. Not only spices but also herbs are available here. This bazaar is based on Egyptian Lines.
Dolmabahce Palace
This imperial building is located close to the shores of Bosporus. The chandelier hanging from the high ceiling of the palace is known to be the largest in the whole of Europe
